Mechanical Rock is a fast‑growing technology consultancy specialising in modern software engineering, cloud, DevOps and product delivery.

The Challenge

Mechanical Rock has experienced rapid growth across consulting and product services, increasing complexity in roles, decision‑making and leadership accountability.

At the same time, the broader consulting market had become more challenging, placing greater emphasis on market engagement, business development and customer relationship management. It became clear that stronger capability and clearer ownership in these areas would be essential for the next chapter of growth.

Importantly, the organisation already had impressive foundations, exceptional talent, strong documentation, well‑defined delivery frameworks and a mature approach to project execution. These strengths provided a solid platform for success. The goal was not to introduce unnecessary hierarchy or disrupt the company’s relatively flat structure, which was a valued part of its culture. Instead, the focus was on refining clarity, decision‑making and capability to support scale.

Mechanical Rock needed an organisational design that would:

  • Enable future strategic growth
  • Strengthen leadership capability and accountability
  • Reduce operational reliance on the business owner
  • Build clearer ownership of market engagement and client relationship management
  • Preserve the flat structure and avoid unnecessary hierarchy
  • Maintain culture while enabling faster, clearer decision‑making
  • Leverage existing strengths without major restructuring

The Solution

EHQ partnered with Mechanical Rock to redesign the organisation using a structured, people‑centred approach grounded in Succession Thinking and organisational design frameworks.

Our work focused on:

  • Clarifying the organisation’s vision, strategy and core purpose
  • Understanding the current business model, value chain and team dynamics
  • Identifying which accountabilities and decisions should transition away from the owner
  • Mapping current capability and defining future capability required for growth, succession and market engagement
  • Designing a future‑fit organisational structure aligned to leadership depth, autonomy and accountability
  • Clearly defining roles, decision‑making authority and responsibilities to support implementation

Because the organisation already had strong delivery frameworks and documentation, the work centred on targeted improvements rather than major structural change. This demonstrated that effective organisation design doesn’t require “throwing the baby out with the bathwater”, often, the most powerful shifts come from practical refinements in structure, clarity and capability that create the right environment for strategy to succeed.

The Outcomes

The organisational redesign delivered clear, measurable improvements:

  • Reduced operational reliance on the business owner, enabling greater focus on strategy and ownership
  • Faster, clearer decision‑making across the leadership team
  • Strengthened leadership capability, autonomy and accountability
  • Improved role clarity, reducing duplication and informal overload
  • Clearer ownership of business development and client relationship management
  • A scalable organisational structure aligned to long‑term growth and succession planning
  • Preservation of a flat, collaborative structure while improving clarity and accountability
  • Enhanced alignment between structure, delivery frameworks and strategic direction

Conclusion

This engagement provided Mechanical Rock with a strong organisational foundation for sustainable growth, empowered leadership and long‑term success.

By building on existing strengths, rather than replacing them, and aligning structure, capability and decision‑making with the organisation’s future vision, Mechanical Rock is now positioned to scale with confidence, without compromising clarity, culture or performance.

“EHQ took the time to truly understand our business, culture and ambitions. The work felt collaborative, thoughtful and grounded in what would genuinely support our future- not a one-size-fits-all model”
