For the past seven months, EHQ Consulting Director Louise Byrne has had the privilege of stepping into the role of Program Manager for the Future Female Leaders (FFL) Signature Program.
It’s an experience that has been incredibly close to Louise’s heart and has reinforced something we believe deeply at EHQ:
Leadership potential exists everywhere. Sometimes, people just need the opportunity, encouragement and belief to discover it for themselves.
Developing the next generation of female leaders.
Future Female Leaders exists to empower young women with the confidence, capability, connections and experiences to step into their potential as leaders.
The Signature Program brings together 20 Year 11 students from across Western Australia for an immersive six-month leadership development experience.
Competition for the 2026 program was extraordinary, with more than 300 young women applying for just 20 places.
Putting yourself forward takes courage in itself. Every participant took a risk without knowing whether she would be successful- an important leadership lesson before the program had even begun.
Across the six months, participants have experienced a combination of leadership development workshops, coaching, one-to-one mentoring, webinars with industry experts, STEM experiences, public speaking development and opportunities to connect with established leaders and organisations.
Each participant was also matched with her own mentor, providing access to an experienced woman who could offer perspective, challenge, encouragement and, importantly, genuine belief in her potential.
The participants then had an opportunity to put their leadership into practice by developing and delivering their own social impact projects.
They identified issues they genuinely cared about and turned those ideas into action within their schools and communities.
Along the way, they pitched their ideas, built relationships, asked for support, navigated challenges, adapted when things didn’t go according to plan and ultimately stood on stage at the 2026 Impact Celebration to share what they had achieved.
Not bad for a group of 16-year-olds.
Confidence, self-awareness and belief
While every participant’s journey was different, one common theme stood out across the program.
They grew in confidence, self-awareness and belief in their own abilities.
They leave FFL knowing more about themselves, more about what they’re capable of and more about what it really takes to be a great leader.
Not leadership as a title or position.
But leadership as self-awareness, courage, empathy, resilience, purpose and a willingness to step forward and make a difference.
For Louise, who has spent many years coaching leaders and facilitating leadership development programs- including programs specifically designed to support women in leadership- this was particularly meaningful.
Her career has also included a longstanding passion for diversity, equity and inclusion, and creating workplaces and communities where opportunity isn’t determined by gender, background or circumstance.
The Signature Program brought many of those threads together.
Never underestimate the power of mentorship
Another powerful reminder from the past seven months has been the impact of mentorship.
We can sometimes underestimate the influence we can have as mentors.
Having someone impartial in your corner who genuinely believes in you is incredibly powerful.
Someone who sees potential you may not yet see in yourself. Someone who asks the question that makes you think differently. Someone who challenges you when you need it and encourages you when your confidence wobbles.
Sometimes simply knowing that another person genuinely believes you are capable can change how you see yourself.
And for a young woman at 16, that belief can be incredibly powerful.
More than a leadership program
One of the most special outcomes of the Signature Program wasn’t something written into a workshop agenda.
It was the connection the participants created with each other.
Over the course of the program, 20 young women who largely began as strangers developed genuine friendships and a support network that we hope will remain with them long after FFL.
They encouraged each other, celebrated each other’s achievements and created a wonderful sense of belonging.
And ladies… Yochi will forever remind Louise of you
Those relationships are an important reminder that leadership development isn’t only about building individual capability.
It’s also about helping people build communities around them- people who will challenge them, champion them and celebrate their success.
When the impact becomes real
Program management isn’t always glamorous.
Behind every workshop, webinar, mentoring relationship, event and celebration are hundreds of emails, schedules, logistics, stakeholder conversations, last-minute changes and, occasionally, the odd administrative mistake.
When you’re deep in delivery mode, it can sometimes be easy to lose sight of why the program exists in the first place.
The 2026 Impact Celebration brought that why back into focus beautifully.
Watching each participant take the stage and speak about her experience, her social impact project and what she had learnt about herself was incredibly special.
These young women were articulate, thoughtful, courageous and, in many cases, wise well beyond their years.
And they are only 16
At the end of the evening, the participants surprised the FFL Directors and Louise with thoughtful gifts and a beautiful card.
Seeing the genuine gratitude in their faces as everyone said goodbye was one of those moments that made every challenge along the way worthwhile.
One participant shared a Dolly Parton quote during her speech that has stayed with Louise:
“We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.”
What a lesson to take into whatever comes next.
Thinking about the world our daughters will inherit
For Louise, the experience has also had a very personal dimension.
As the mum of a five-year-old daughter, working alongside these young women inevitably prompts thoughts about the world the next generation of girls will inherit.
There is so much hope for what that world could look like.
A world where gender doesn’t determine which opportunities are available to her.
Where it doesn’t influence how seriously her voice is taken, what she earns, which leadership roles she can aspire to, or how far she can progress.
Hopefully, by the time today’s five-year-olds enter the workforce, some of the conversations we’re still having about gender inequity will feel like conversations belonging to another generation.
But hope alone won’t get us there.
It will take organisations, leaders, mentors and communities prepared to deliberately invest in the generations coming behind us.
Programs like Future Female Leaders are helping to do exactly that
And if Louise’s daughter has the opportunity to participate in something as transformative as the Signature Program when she is 16, we hope she grabs it with both hands.
The end of one role – and the beginning of FFL’s next chapter
As the 2026 Signature Program comes to an end, so too does Louise’s role managing the program.
FFL has grown significantly since it was first established, and with that growth has come a broader and more diversified suite of programs and opportunities.
That creates an exciting next chapter for the organisation and also a need to continue evolving the structure, roles and operating model sitting behind those programs.
As FFL’s impact expands, the organisation needs the right foundations in place to support that growth sustainably, create clarity around responsibilities and ensure its different programs can continue to deliver the experience and impact for which FFL has become known.
For Louise, this also feels like the right point to bring her primary focus back to EHQ Consulting.
Over the coming year, her focus will be on continuing to grow EHQ and supporting business owners, leaders and organisations with the work she is most passionate about –building stronger organisations, developing capable and inspirational leaders, and creating workplaces where people and businesses can excel.
But this is certainly not the end of the relationship with FFL.
The founders and Directors have created something genuinely special. Six years into its journey, FFL continues to evolve and expand its impact, including through initiatives such as the Purposeful Leaders Program-with an online version of the program, making it more accessible than ever.
EHQ is incredibly proud to have played a part in the 2026 Signature Program.
Louise and EHQ will continue to champion, advocate for and be ambassadors for Future Female Leaders as the organisation moves into its next stage of growth.
The relationship may be changing, but our belief in what FFL is creating absolutely isn’t.
This is just the beginning
To the 20 incredible young women who completed the 2026 Signature Program:
-
- Keep putting yourselves out there.
-
- Keep taking the opportunities that scare you a little.
-
- Keep asking questions.
-
- Keep backing each other.
-
- And keep believing that your voice and contribution matter.
More than 300 young women put themselves forward for this experience and you earned one of those 20 places.
Look at what happened because you were willing to take that first risk.
We are incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved, but perhaps even more excited about what comes next.
Because this isn’t the end of your FFL journey.
It’s just the beginning.
And for the organisations and leaders reading this who are passionate about gender equity and creating opportunities for the next generation of female leaders, we strongly encourage you to explore how you can support Future Female Leaders.
Because investing in these young women isn’t simply about developing the leaders of tomorrow.
It’s about giving them the confidence to recognise that they can lead today.
We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails
